Police conduct internal investigation into incident near Hulhumale' checkpoint

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced an internal investigation into an alleged assault involving a 17-year-old who did not stop at a checkpoint in Hulhumale' Phase II. The incident purportedly involved a police officer on duty.

Initially circulating on social media platforms, the incident sparked outrage, with claims that a police officer had attacked the girl. However, MPS has refuted these allegations, stating that they are false. Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan provided clarity on the situation, explaining that the teenager was riding a motorcycle that accelerated upon reaching the checkpoint and failed to stop despite police signals. He further explained that the teenager fell from the motorcycle while attempting to overtake, and it was revealed that they were underage and did not possess a driver's license. Shifan did not disclose further details about the incident.

Despite MPS's dismissal of the assault claims, CCTV footage and other videos related to the incident have circulated on social media platforms. In response, MPS has initiated an internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
