Innamaadhoo shore protection project begins

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun the shore protection project in Innamaadhoo, Raa Atoll.

Under the Innamaadhoo Coastal Protection Project, MTCC will be constructing a 360m groyne on the northern side of the island within seven months at a cost of USD1 million. The island has a popular of 900 residents and is notable for its boatbuilding and carpentry. The island is experiencing erosion on the northern side, which is impacting its economic prospects.

Speaking to PSM news, President of Innamaadhoo Island Council Ahmed Azmeen said that the island has been experiencing an unusual level of erosion recently and that the island incurs damage every day that the beach is left unprotected, emphasizing the severe threat of erosion. He added that the west side of the island is also eroding and that workers have expressed concern that it is affecting the area designated for boatbuilding and carpentry. As such, he expects the shore protection project to greatly alleviate the problem.
