Most reported cases are recruitment cases that facilitate corruption: ACC

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has revealed that the highest number of reported cases are linked to accusations of government agencies facilitating corruption in procurement processes and employee recruitment.

In its report released on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day, the ACC revealed thata total of 4,866 corruption cases were registered with the commission between 2017-2021. The peak year for corruption filings was 2019, with 1,397 cases reported. These cases revolve around allegations that government entities have played a role in corrupt practices related to the procurement of goods and the recruitment of individuals. The ACC also undertook investigations into 4,349 corruption-related cases during the same period, with the highest number occurring in 2019.

In an effort to enhance its anti-corruption initiatives, the ACC has marked this year's Anti-Corruption Day with significant developments. The commission has intensified its drive to combat corruption and established an anti-corruption trust fund, aiming to reduce reliance on the state budget for conducting investigations. In addition, a specialised academy has been set up to cultivate skilled human resources, addressing a crucial challenge in the field. These measures will empower the ACC to confront corruption in the Maldives more independently in the future.

International Anti-Corruption Day serves as a platform to heighten public awareness about corruption and break down barriers to its prevention. The United Nations (UN) has chosen Uniting the World Against Corruption as this year's theme.
