Material Recovery Facility opens in Hulhumale’

Urbanco has opened a Material Recovery Facility in Hulhumale’.

The Material Recovery Facility was inaugurated by the Deputy Managing Director of Urbanco Ahmed Gais. The facility was built by the Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA) and the Coca-Cola Foundation.

At the opening ceremony, the President of the Coca-Cola Foundation Saadia Madsbjerg said the aim is to make a difference by investing in innovative thinking and institutions around the world, which provide solutions to major challenges for communities. She said the opening of the facility is a major step forward for the sustainable development efforts in the Maldives.

Also at the ceremony, Managing Director of Urbanco Ahmed Athif said he was pleased to be involved in this initiative which will set a new standard for waste management in the Maldives. He added that the facility will not only reduce pollution from plastic waste but also create new economic and livelihood opportunities for the local community.

The Material Recovery Facility plays a vital role in waste management by efficiently handling and processing various reusable materials, including PET plastic. These materials are transformed into raw materials that can be utilised in the production of new products. By engaging in such sustainable practices, the facility contributes to the development of a circular economy, effectively manages waste, mitigates pollution, reduces toxic gas emissions, and maximises the potential of reusable materials.

The Coca-Cola Foundation provided a USD10,000 grant for the development and operation of the Material Recovery Facility. The facility is located in Hulhumale’ Phase II and includes an unloading machine, a pickup, weighing equipment, and a forklift.
