Maldives begins testing for COVID-19 variants

The Maldives has successfully begun testing Human Genomic Sequencing to test for COVID-19 variants.

The Maldives has been testing for variants of COVID-19 by sending samples to India. The World Health Organisation (WHO) donated the first Human Genomic Sequencing machine called the Miseq Machine to the Maldives. The machine will be used to test for COVID-19 variants after training the required staff. These employees completed their training in India, according to the WHO Maldives Office.

Six cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the country in the past week, according to the latest figures released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA). There have been 311 deaths so far and a total of 185,708 individuals have been infected in the Maldives since the first case was detected in March 2020.
