Amendments submitted to the Judicature Act and Judges’ Act

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has submitted the final drafts of the amendments bills to the Judicature Act and Judges’ Act to the President’s Office for submission to the Parliament of the Maldives.

The AGO stated the amendment bill to the Judicature Act includes changes to the composition of courts and the establishment of district courts in judicial districts to be allocated in different regions of the country. The bill also includes revision of the current procedures in appointing magistrates and the establishment of circuits for every judicial constituency.

Meanwhile, the amendment bill to the Judges’ Act aims to detail some of the clauses in the act to ensure judges carry out their responsibilities in a way that does not compromise the independence of the judiciary and maintain public confidence in the judicial system. The AGO said the bill includes amendments to the policies on ensuring the security of judges, as well as the rules on the financial and commercial matters related to judges.

The two bills are part of the government’s efforts to reform the judiciary and regain public confidence and trust in the judicial system.
