Chief of Protocol Shan to be appointed as Ambassador to Germany

Chief of Protocol Aishath Shan Shakir has been nominated to be appointed as the Ambassador of Germany to the Maldives following the decision to recall the current Ambassador Ahmed Latheef. The Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations has begun reviewing the nomination.

Ahmed Latheef was appointed as the German Ambassador in 2020. He began his foreign service career in 1981 and served at different posts in the area of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. In this regard, he served as the first Ambassador of the Maldives to China in 2007 and held the tenure for five consecutive years. The last post he served before the ambassadorship was as the Director-General of Transition appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The new appointee, Aishath Shaan Shakir previously held the position of High Commissioner to Bangladesh. She had also previously held the positions of Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia, and Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in addition to other top positions. She is also the first female to serve as the Chief of Protocol at the foreign ministry.
