Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed has stated Maldives Police Service (MPS) will not provide any room for acts of terrorism.
Speaking at a programme aired on PSM News, CP Hameed said the existence of terrorist and extremist ideologies and threats is undeniable, noting the attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6 last year proved the severity of the threat. The commissioner stated that such attacks are coordinated by several networks working together. He added that threats come in many forms, including social media where terrorist organisations are continuously working on brainwashing young people and recruiting them.
Speaking further, CP Hameed said MPS is fully prepared for any threat of violence and terrorism. He noted that the response of MPS to the May 6 attack was highly professional, highlighting the arrest of all involved in the attack and completion of legal formalities to press charges within the duration specified by relevant laws.
The police commissioner further noted that MPS will not provide any room for the planning and execution of any acts of terrorism in the Maldives. He added that MPS allocates the same priority to the prevention of anti-Islamic acts, noting the police will continue working with the relevant authorities and institutions in maintaining peace and harmony in the nation.
