Discussions held on revising the composition of Fatwa Council

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has conducted discussions with relevant authorities and stakeholders on revising the composition and responsibilities of the Supreme Council for Fatwa in the Maldives.

The discussions were held during a meeting held at the AGO on March 20. During the meeting, discussions were held on bringing certain amendments to the Religious Unity Act to promote peace and harmony. As such, one of the discussed amendments was revising the composition and responsibilities of the Fatwa Council.

Furthermore, discussions were also held on identifying the amendments that are required to tackle the spread of violent extremism. Stakeholders also discussed establishing administrative solutions through relevant authorities for certain cases instead of seeking solutions from the criminal justice system, and the actions that are required to stop the spread of misinformation through modern communication platforms.

The discussions were held as part of the preparation of an amendment bill to the Religious Unity Act.
