Ministry of Defence has stated there are no armed foreign military personnel in the Maldives. The defence ministry made the statement in a press release published in response to an India Out campaign held in Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. During the campaign, protesters made false claims regarding the coast guard harbour and dockyard being developed in north Thilafalhu, Kaafu Atoll.
In the press release, the defence ministry stated the area is being developed for use by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for national security purposes and will never be used by foreign military personnel. The ministry refuted claims that foreign military personnel are active in the area by stating the area is fully owned by the Government of the Maldives and will only be used by Maldivian military personnel. It stated the Maldives has the right to provide clearance before a foreign military vessel enters Maldivian territory and condemned individuals who have claimed that foreign military vessels can enter without permission.
Furthermore, the defence ministry urged individuals not to spread false information that undermines national peace and security and assured Maldivians that the military stands vigilant and ready to protect the independent sovereignty of the country.
