Parliamentary by-election held for Komandoo constituency

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has conducted the parliamentary by-election for Komandoo constituency in Shaviyani Atoll.

The by-election for Komandoo constituency, which consists of the islands Komandoo, Foakaidhoo and Maroshi, is being held due to the passing of late Parliamentarian Hussain Waheed who had been representing the constituency in the 19th Session of the Parliament of the Maldives. Voting for the by-election was carried out across the three islands of the constituency, as well as Male’ City for citizens of the three islands. Over 3,300 people were eligible to vote in the by-election.

The Komandoo by-election is being contested by candidates from the main ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives National Party (MNP). A strong, competitive campaign was carried out for the by-election, with all campaign activities concluded by 1800hrs on February 4 in accordance to the Electoral Act.

Two other by-elections were held on February 5, in parallel with the Komandoo by-election. These by-elections were held for the vacant Women’s Development Committee (WDC) seats of Vilufushi, Thaa Atoll and Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
