Will not allow religion, culture to be undermined: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has warned he will not allow terrorist and extremist groups to undermine the religion and culture in the Maldives. He made the announcement while delivering the Presidential Address at the Parliament of the Maldives.

In his address, President Solih detailed the actions the government is taking to uncover and eliminate extremist ideology in the country. The president recollected the May 6 terrorist attack, which had seriously injured Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. He said the work to strengthen democracy and human rights in the Maldives was renewed after Nasheed survived the attack.

Furthermore, President Solih announced a nationwide campaign to disseminate accurate information on Islam as part of efforts to combat extremist ideologies. The president said the administration places a high value on providing the public with accurate information about Islam, as well as fostering youth who adhere to Islamic principles and values.

He also said the government stands ready to defend religion and national independence against any group that threatens to undermine it.
