President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced a nationwide campaign called the National Moderation Campaign will commence this year to disseminate accurate information on Islam. He made the announcement while delivering the Presidential Address at the Parliament of the Maldives.
Delivering the address, President Solih said the moderation campaign will be launched as part of efforts to combat extremist ideologies. The president said the administration places a high value on providing the public with accurate information about Islam, as well as fostering youth who adhere to Islamic principles and values. As such, he said awareness campaigns were conducted in 180 islands to spread accurate information about Islam and that 1,599 students graduated as Quran teachers last year, while 290 students are currently enrolled in degree programmes on Islamic studies.
Furthermore, President Solih revealed the government's plans to build new mosques and to formulate legislation that governs Hajj and Umrah, Waqf and Zakat that would be forwarded to the Parliament this year. He highlighted that combatting extremism and terrorism in the name of religion is a challenging task but that the government will not allow anyone to undermine religion and culture of the Maldives.
