Ministry of Home Affairs has established a juvenile detention centre in Asseyri Prison in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
The juvenile detention centre was established in accordance to the Juvenile Justice Act. The objective of the centre is to provide early rehabilitation for juveniles exposed to crime.
Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the juvenile detention centre, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla said the administration places a high priority on protecting children from criminal activities. The minister said the newly established centre is a major boost towards the efforts to rehabilitate children who are exposed to crime and to reintegrate them back to society.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem said the juvenile detention centre is an important milestone in addressing the issues of individuals who get pulled into crime at an early age. He expressed hope the establishment of the centre would enable the development of a more resilient society.
The juvenile detention centre was established with the resources and personnel required to provide rehabilitation for juveniles exposed to crime. It is part of the administration’s efforts to build a peaceful and resilient society in the Maldives.
