The Government of the Maldives has appointed an Honorary Consul to Burundi.
The newly appointed Honorary Consul of the Maldives in Burundi, Sylvere Bankimbaga, received his letter of appointment from Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel on January 27. He becomes the first ever Honorary Consul of the Maldives in Burundi.
Following the appointment, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid congratulated the new Honorary Consul of the Maldives in Burundi and expressed hope the appointment would lead to closer bilateral and economic ties between the Maldives and Burundi, especially people to people links in trade, investment and tourism sectors.
Maldives and Burundi formally established diplomatic ties on January 21. Following the establishment of diplomatic relations with Burundi, the Maldives currently maintains diplomatic relations with 179 countries.
Burundi is a landlocked country situated in Africa, with a population of approximately 11.89 million.
