State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced it has connected Hulhule' to the interconnected power grid established in the Greater Male' Region.
Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL) was previously generating power in Hulhule' using one power station on the island that has the main international airport of the Maldives, Velana International Airport (VIA). However, Hulhule' is now connected to the power grids of Male' City and Hulhumale' under the Greater Male' Interconnection Project.
The interconnected grid is mainly powered by a 50MW power station established in Hulhumale' under the Fifth Power Project. Under the Greater Male' Interconnection Project, the power grids of Male', Hulhumale' and Hulhule' have been interconnected with a 100MW interconnection cable running under the Sinamale' Bridge.
As part of the project, four 95 Mega Volt-Amp (MVA) transformers have been placed in Male' and Hulhumale', along with two 8MVA transformers in Hulhule'.
STELCO stated the aim of the project is to sustainably provide electricity services in the Greater Male' Region without interruptions. As such, the company said interconnection of the power grids would ensure that any problems encountered to the power grid of an individual region could be countered through the power grid of an interconnected region.
