AP endorses MDP candidate in Komandoo Parliamentary by-election

Adhaalath Party (AP) has endorsed Mohamed Rashid, the candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the parliamentary by-election of the Komandoo constituency.

AP, a coalition partner of the government, made the decision at the request of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. As such, members of AP, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir, and Chief of Staff at the President's Office Ali Zahir are participating in MDP's campaign events.

Meanwhile, the Jumhooree Party (JP), also a coalition partner of the government, has also endorsed the MDP candidate, but Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has decided not to endorse any candidate.

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has scheduled the by-election for the vacant parliamentary seat of the Komandoo constituency for February 5.

ECM made the announcement following the passing of Parliamentarian Hussain Waheed, who had represented Komandoo during the 17th and 19th parliamentary terms. He passed away on December 13, 2021, while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Candidates from three parties are contesting in the Komandoo by-election. The candidates are Mohamed Rashid from MDP, Moosa Fathuhee Adam from the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and Abdul Hannan Idris from the newly formed Maldives National Party (MNP).
