Vice President Faisal Naseem has inaugurated the fieldwork of the harbour development project in Maroshi, Shaviyani Atoll. He inaugurated the fieldwork at a special ceremony in Maroshi, during his trip to some islands of Shaviyani Atoll.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure contracted Heavy Force Private Limited to design and build the harbour in September last year. The agreement was signed by Managing Director of Heavy Force Ibrahim Zameer, and Director General Fathimath Shaana signed on behalf of the ministry.
Heavy Force is currently bringing in the necessary resources and equipment to mobilise the project site. Vice President Naseem was warmly welcomed by the residents upon his arrival to Maroshi.
Speaking at the ceremony, the vice president said the harbour development project will greatly ease the travel and transport issues faced by island residents.
Currently, Maroshi consists of a harbour spanning 183m long and 76m wide, which had been severely damaged during the 2004 tsunami. The scope of the work involves extending the land area of the harbour by 396m and establishing a 490m sand-fill breakwater. The work also involves establishing a ramp for docking of large vessels such as barges, as well as developing pavements and installing street lamps.
Heavy Force is tasked with completing the project within 420 days at a cost of USD 2.9 million.
