Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have begun a joint public safety operation in the Greater Male' Region.
In a press statement, MPS stated it began the joint operation with MNDF on January 9. The police service stated the purpose of the operation is to strengthen public safety and maintain peace in the capital city. It also acknowledged the help and support provided by civilians in such operations.
Media outlets have recently reported the arrest of an individual who was allegedly spreading extremist ideology in Villimale'. However, the security services have not disclosed details of the operation or the arrest.
MPS conducted operations in the Male' last year as well, including Operation Riveli, which saw the arrest of 88 individuals. The operation was launched as part of efforts to strengthen general policing and to ensure public safety in Male' following an increase in crime.
MPS and MNDF had also conducted anti-terrorism operations following the terrorist attack on May 6, 2021, which wounded Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
