Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated police officers have been assaulted and state property damaged at gatherings organised by the opposition.
In a press statement, MPS stated officers make arrests at protests and in various other situations in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations. As such, the police service stated officers make arrests during protests only when necessary, in accordance with the established laws. It also stated that investigations are being conducted on individuals who have repeatedly encouraged protestors to engage in unlawful behaviour during gatherings organised by political parties, which include obstructing traffic and stopping public buses.
Furthermore, MPS stated officers use appropriate and minimal force when breaking up gatherings but that some officers have been assaulted by protestors, and some protestors have attempted to obstruct the work of state authorities. It urged citizens to submit complaints of inappropriate use of police force or any other complaints regarding the police to MPS, the National Integrity Commission (NIC), or other relevant authorities. It added that police officers remain steadfast in enforcing the law and safeguarding citizens.
