Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has stated the government will bring revolutionary economic changes in the coming years. He made the remarks in his address at the ceremony to launch the parliamentary by-election campaign in Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll for MDP candidate Mohamed Rashid.
At the ceremony, Minister Fayyaz highlighted the government's efforts to uphold the rights of workers and businesses. The minister said the government is also continuously working to alleviate the challenges faced by residents following the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the global increase in the price of goods has affected the Maldives, which heavily relies on imports, and that the government is working to alleviate the financial impact for citizens.
Furthermore, Minister Fayyaz noted the positive impact of introducing the minimum wage and said it has increased salaries for 13,000 Maldivians working in the tourism industry. He detailed that the collective yearly wages for the 13,000 tourism workers have increased by USD 23 million and the yearly wages for the 15,000 state employees have increased by USD 39 million. He added that the government has the capability to bring revolutionary changes and citizens will soon see these changes in the coming years.
