Parties should step aside and allow MDP to fulfill pledges: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on political parties to step aside and allow the government and the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to continue fulfilling its pledges. He made the remarks while speaking at the ceremony held to launch the parliamentary by-election campaign in Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll for MDP candidate Mohamed Rashid.

Speaking at the campaign launching ceremony, President Solih said the government has moved the new power station away from the residential population in order to solve the noise complaints from the previous 32-year-old power station on the island. The president said the government has solved numerous issues in Komandoo and that the government will be able to continue fulfilling its pledges if constituents vote for the MDP candidate and if other political parties step aside. He vowed to begin numerous projects in Komandoo within the next few weeks, adding that the work is not related to the campaign. He also highlighted the important work the government has conducted in Komandoo in the last three years.

Residents of Komandoo warmly greeted President Solih upon his arrival to the island to launch the campaign as the leader of the ruling party. During the trip, the president inaugurated the new power station in Komandoo, which was established as part of the government's policy to expand and upgrade electricity services in the atolls.
