Gov’t will not stand down in the fight against drugs: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the government will not stand down in the efforts to secure borders and eliminate the trafficking of drugs into the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the newly developed harbour in Landhoo, Noonu Atoll, President Solih said the true benefit of the development projects undertaken across the country can only be reaped by establishing social harmony. The president said the fight against drugs has been kicked up to a new gear by the current administration as part of the efforts to establish a peaceful and stable society. As such, he noted the amount of drugs seized during 2021 across different police operations had set new records for the country.

Speaking further, President Solih said there are certain individuals and groups who are concerned by the new measures imposed to tighten border security and stop the trafficking of drugs into the country. However, he said the government will not stand down in the fight against drugs, and will do everything required to safeguard the community.

Last month, President Solih formed a special taskforce to address and tackle the nationwide issues related to drugs. The government says the formation of the taskforce allows the president to directly oversee and instruct the relevant authorities and institutions working to tackle the issue.
