In a tweet, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali revealed the USD 5.5 million received as Zakat al-Mal this year was the highest amount collected as Zakat al-Mal in a single year. It is also a significant increase compared to the USD 3 million collected as Zakat al-Mal during 2020.
Zakat al Mal is a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth and is a mandatory charitable contribution. The Nisab, or the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to give Zakat is decided by the Islamic ministry on an annual basis. The minimum amount for Zakat al-Mal in the Maldives this year is USD 445.
In Maldives, the Zakat al-Mal is collected by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
