88 people arrested under Operation Riveli 2021

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed 88 people have been arrested under the Operation Riveli 2021, carried out ahead of the new year.

Operation Riveli 2021 was launched by MPS as part of efforts to strengthen general policing and to ensure public safety in the Greater Male’ Region following an increase of crimes. Speaking at a press conference held to disseminate information on the operation, Head Inspector of Police at Galolhu Police Station Sultan Ahmed Bishar said 2,260 people were stopped and questioned within the past one week, and 3,516 vehicles were inspected. He noted 88 people were brought into custody during the operation.

Speaking further, the head inspector revealed 84 vehicles were towed during the past one week as part of the operation, while 7 people were stopped for driving dangerously. He added 119 people were fined for not wearing face masks, with another 165 people warned for this offence.

MPS said Operation Riveli will continue into the new year. MPS said individuals who are roaming around suspiciously after midnight as well as groups and gangs causing disturbances to the public will be stopped and questioned as part of the operation.
