Large businesses and politicians behind major drug networks: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated there are large businesses and politicians who receive benefits from major drug trafficking networks in the Maldives. He made the remarks during the ceremony held in Dhoonidhoo, Kaafu Atoll to destroy more than 300kgs of drugs seized during police operations within this month.

Speaking at the ceremony, Home Minister Imran said there are many obstacles in resolving the drug trafficking issues, including political and legal obstacles. Noting there are major businesses and politicians behind large drug networks, the minister said police officers as well as journalists are forced to put their lives on the line when working to disclose the real roots of the drug problem in the Maldives. However, he said the Maldives Police Service (MPS) will not surrender in the face of adversity, and will continue with their dedicated efforts to rid the country from drugs.

Speaking further, the home minister highlighted the importance of cooperation among the relevant authorities and institutions in bringing drug dealers to justice. He said the whole nation must unite to effectively address and resolve the drug problem in the Maldives.

During the ceremony held in Dhoonidhoo on December 28, 314 kgs of drugs seized in recent weeks were destroyed. This includes drugs seized from Male’ and Hulhumale’, as well as Raa Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
