COVID-19 underlined importance of decentralising healthcare: Vice President

Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of decentralising healthcare in the Maldives. He made the remarks while addressing the function held to mark the 10th anniversary of national health insurance provider Aasandha Company Limited.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Naseem noted many patients had received treatment in atoll hospitals after they were unable to travel to Male' City during the pandemic. The vice president said the improved atoll hospitals were able to conduct major operations that were previously beyond their capacity and gain the trust and respect of the public. He also said the government is currently working to develop tertiary hospitals in five regions in its efforts to improve access to public services.

Furthermore, Vice President Naseem acknowledged the challenges the pandemic caused to healthcare services, especially in travelling abroad for medical needs. The vice president emphasised the efforts by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the administration to find ways for patients to travel to India for medical needs despite travel restrictions and closed borders. He also highlighted that a large percentage of the population seeks medical treatment under the universal health insurance scheme and spoke about the importance of preventative measures to avoid and reduce the risk of falling sick.

At the function, Vice President Naseem officially launched the mobile application of Aasandha. He also presented long-service awards to staff of the company who have been serving since its inception, and he was presented with a commemorative plaque as a token of appreciation.
