Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has stated drivers and passengers of four-wheeled vehicles will be required to wear seat belts when driving on roads with speed limits above 30 km/h, starting from January 1, 2022.
The transport ministry said the amended land transport regulation mandates drivers and those in the passenger seat of four-wheeled vehicles to wear seat belts. The ministry said the regulation will be enforced starting from the first day of 2022.
The land transport regulation further states drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles driving on roads where the speed limit is above 30 km/h are required to wear helmets. The regulation also bans carrying children under the age of three on motorcycles without the required support.
The land transport regulations states individuals found driving dangerously or recklessly will be fined USD 130 for the first offence. A second and third offence will lead to fines of USD 260 and USD 390 respectively.
Furthermore, the regulation states criminal charges can be pressed against an individual whose dangerous or reckless driving resulted in a death or life-threatening injury. The transport ministry is given the authority to withhold the driving licenses of such individuals for a period between 10-25 years.
