Gov't to provide financial aid to Maldivian students in the Philippines

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated the government will be providing financial assistance to Maldivian students in Cebu City in the Philippines. The government made the decision following the super typhoon that hit the Southeast Asian nation.

The typhoon has caused massive damages to the dormitory that houses Maldivian students in Cebu City, leaving them without water or electricity. The decision to provide financial assistance to the students was made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The foreign ministry cited the Philippines Embassy stating that it would take a month to re-establish water supply and electricity to the area. Therefore, the government will be providing financial assistance to the students for a month.

The foreign ministry earlier stated the Honorary Consulate of the Maldives in the Philippines is working with the authorities to assist Maldivians in the affected areas. As such, the ministry stated the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is working to supply emergency food and water to those affected. The ministry also assured it is re-establishing lines of communication between the affected individuals and their families.

Over 300 people are reportedly dead after Typhoon Rai hit the Southeastern region of the Philippines. The typhoon is the strongest to hit the Philippines this year, and has disabled communications and left millions of people without electricity in the affected areas.
