Chief of Staff at the President's Office Ali Zahir has assured the India Out Campaign will not adversely affect long standing bilateral relations between The Maldives and India, although there are concerns on how the individuals may act on heeding the campaign.
Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Chief of Staff expressed concern the campaign would create fear and distrust between citizens of both countries, which might result in individuals taking actions on their own. Zahir also said the India Out campaign is not political in nature and that it is being conducted to create disorder in the country.
Zahir stated the agreements between the Maldives and India were signed by the previous governments and that the current administration is fulfilling its responsibility in implementing the agreements. He also refuted the opposition's claim that the Indian military is stationed in the Maldives and said only a few doctors and technical staff from the Indian military are in the country.
Furthermore, he added the government will not hinder the freedom of expression and assembly but that it is also responsible for halting any activity that threatens the peace and harm citizens. Ali Zahir described the opposition's efforts, especially led by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, as a disgrace for the country. He also added the government will not hereby entertain any such acts.
He said the government's highest priority is to maintain peace and safety in the country and will no longer tolerate such activities.
