President conveys greetings to Qatar on National Day

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has conveyed greetings to Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the occasion of the National Day of Qatar.

In the message, President Solih conveyed greetings to the government and people of Qatar on the occasion of the country's 50th National Day. He also expressed hope that Qatar will continue to strengthen its peace and unity and receive good fortune and progress.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid also conveyed greetings to the government and people of Qatar and said he remains assured that the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries will flourish over the years.

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Qatar in 1984. The government reinstated full diplomatic ties with Qatar this year after the previous administration severed diplomatic relations in 2017. Reinstating diplomatic ties with Qatar was an electoral pledge of President Solih.

Maldives and Qatar held the first official bilateral talks since re-establishing diplomatic ties during President Solih's visit to the country in March. During the visit, President Solih and Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani discussed ways of strengthening the bilateral bond between the two countries as well as increasing people-to-people contact and business relations.

The president also expressed his desire to continue to work together with Qatar on issues of global importance, such as climate change, sustainable development, and the promotion and protection of human rights.
