Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has handed local councils the responsibility to determine the maximum number of vehicle registrations in an island. The transport ministry's new regulation states local councils will also be responsible for setting the time limit for the vehicle registrations.
The ministry stated the purpose of the new regulation is to clearly define the policies on the registration and usage of vehicles in various parts of the country. The ministry stated island and city councils will be responsible for implementing the policies, and that the ministry will implement the policies in industrial islands.
The regulation requires local councils to determine the maximum number of registrations and time limits for each type of land vehicles. Local councils are also required to publish the maximum number of vehicle registrations and implement the policies within six months after publication. Councils need to take into account the population, number of vehicles, and the size of the parking areas in an island when setting the policies, as well as make a statistical analysis with the help of experts.
The new regulation also states the time limit for vehicle registration needs to be set in accordance with the date of manufacture. Furthermore, councils are required to submit the proposed maximum number and time limit of vehicle registrations and the assessment report to the transport ministry for review.
