Ministry of Education has decided to temporarily transfer students of Arabiyya School to Izzuddin School.
In a statement, the education ministry said the ministry has recognized that the Arabiyya school building is not safe for students. Many people have expressed concern on social media over several issues, most specifically the large structural cracks on the building.
In a statement, the education ministry stated the decision has been made to shift the functions of Arabiya School to Izzuddin School as a temporary solution as the issue needs to be urgently addressed. The education ministry has also decided to allocate one of the schools currently under construction in Hulhumale’ to Arabiyya School. Further, the education ministry said to resolve any issues that may be faced, the advice and recommendations in the structural assessment will be considered, upon completion of the structural assessment currently ongoing.
Highlighting the concerns raised by the public regarding the lack of adequate measures to address the issues faced by over 700 students studying at Arabiyya School, the ministry said Arabiyya is one school with special features among all the schools operating in the Maldives. The ministry noted the school symbolizes Islamic religion and unity in providing education in the Maldives and the government will always give priority to the school for many such reasons.
The education ministry also noted Arabiyya is a good school for students who wish to study Arabic medium and that the school's curriculum and exams are accepted by Al-Azhar University in Egypt. The ministry specified, therefore, it is very important for the authorities to resolve the issues faced by Arabiyya School, noting it will take time to resolve the issues completely.
