Civil Court of the Maldives has ordered Deputy Mayor of Male' City Ahmed Nareesh to pay rent for a three-room apartment he had rented in the city.
Deputy Mayor Nareesh is required to pay USD 6,000 in rent and USD 557 in electricity and water bills. He denied the charges at the start of the hearings but later transferred USD 2,000 to the apartment owner's bank account and told the court he will pay the remaining amount within six months. However, the court stated the amount was due in 2017 and that the owner has refused his request to pay the remaining amount within six months.
The court also stated that Nareesh did not provide an adequate reason for requiring six months to make the payment. Therefore, Civil Court ordered Nareesh to pay the remaining amount to the court within one month.
