Parliamentarian Waheed played a crucial role for democracy: Speaker

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated Parliamentarian Hussain Waheed played a crucial role during the country's journey towards democracy. He made the statement after Parliamentarian Waheed passed away while receiving treatment at ADK Hospital on December 13.

Speaker Nasheed conveyed his condolences and said Waheed was a strong pillar of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). MDP has also issued a statement praising Waheed's work for the ruling party and the country.

Parliamentarian Waheed had been receiving treatment for cancer in the Maldives and abroad prior to his passing. He had resumed his duties in the Parliament of the Maldives on March 29 after spending a year abroad for treatment.

At his first sitting after returning to the country, Waheed said he had received well wishes from his family, friends, parliamentarians and constituents during his time abroad, and that he was thankful for being able to resume his parliamentary duties.

Many politicians and senior government officials have conveyed condolences after his passing. As such, Parliamentary Group Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Azim praised Waheed's work during the 17th and 18th parliamentary terms. Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid conveyed his condolences to Waheed's family and said he was a person of humility, sincerity, great courage, and a champion of the democracy movement. Representatives of the opposition Progressive Coalition have also conveyed their condolences.

Parliamentarian Hussain Waheed had represented Komandoo during the 17th and 18th parliamentary terms. He is survived by his wife and three children.
