Discussions held to extend finishing period given for Hiya flats

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has revealed discussions are underway with the government to extend the deadline given to the tenants to complete the finishing work of Hiya Flats.

The current deadline to complete the finishing of Hiya flats ends this month. HDC has noted some families are facing difficulties in completing the finishing works of the flats. HDC assured although no decision has been made yet on the matter, a decision will be made soon.

The administration has earlier decided to give until October to complete the finishing works and for tenants to pay rent from October onwards. However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih granted an extension until the end of this year after reviewing the period.

Although many families have started relocating to Hiya Flats, there have been difficulties in obtaining the necessary supplies due to the relocation of a large number of people to Hiya Flats at the same time. Some families have also faced financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the project began as 7,000 housing units, the number of units has since been decreased to 6,720 after reviewing allocated floor space for commercial purposes. The government has also decided to charge USD 550 per month for a Hiyaa Flat with a maintenance fee of USD 65.
