The Government of the Maldives has allocated USD 3.6 million in the proposed state budget for 2022 to upgrade the National Football Stadium.
The government has submitted the proposed state budget of USD 2.4 billion to the Parliament of the Maldives. The government has allocated a USD 2.9 million loan from EXIM Bank of India and an additional USD 647,000 to upgrade the stadium in 2022.
The Government of India provided a USD 40 million Line of Credit for sports infrastructure development in the Maldives in September. The national stadium was last upgraded in 2014 for the AFC Challenge Cup, which saw the development of a building for the media and VIP rooms.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has highlighted safety concerns regarding the stadium. However, only small renovations have been made at the stadium since 2014.
The government has planned major sports-related projects to begin this year, including the construction of a complex for table tennis, basketball, and badminton as well as a court for international volleyball tournaments.
