MTCC completes Maafushi Land Reclamation

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the land reclamation and the shore protection project of Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

The land reclamation and shore protection project in Maafushi is a key electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. As part of the project, MTCC reclaimed a detached separate island connected to the main island via a causeway. MTCC said the reclamation introduced more beach areas to bring a solution to the high demand for residential plots on the island.

The project was awarded to MTCC by the government on August 27, last year. Under the project, MTCC reclaimed 25 hectares of land, while a 1,110-metre revetment was constructed around the reclaimed area as shore protection. The total cost of the project amounts to over USD 6.4 million.

Maafushi is renowned as the origin of local tourism in the Maldives, evident from the guesthouses, souvenir shops, water sports centres all around the island. With over 50 active guesthouses on the island, the tourist bed capacity of Maafushi currently exceeds 1,600.

Maafushi has a population of over 5,000.
