President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has visited the Islamic Centre and reviewed the progress of the new COVID-19 vaccination programme aimed at children between the ages of 12 and 17 years.
The COVID-19 vaccination programme for children aged 12-17 officially kicked off on August 15. Under the programme, children aged 12-17 will be administered the Pfizer vaccine, through their respective schools. With the initiation of this programme, the Maldives is one of the first nations in the world to initiate vaccination for young children.
Last week, President Solih had revealed that the state has successfully acquired enough doses of the Pfizer vaccine to immunise all children in the Maldives between the ages of 12 and 17 years. He further revealed that the Maldives had also successfully acquired enough doses of the vaccine to inoculate all residents of all ages.
Over 80% of the eligible population in the Maldives had received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 69% had completed both doses of the vaccine by the end of the previous week. Under the ongoing nationwide mass vaccination programme, the government aims to fully inoculate 90% of the eligible population by the end of August 2021.
