President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated he values the parliament majority won by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), noting the parliament majority is crucial to ensure smooth governance.
Speaking to the media on the internal conflicts that have broken out within the ruling party, President Solih said he and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed have disagreed on several issues over the years, noting even he had some reservations regarding some of the decisions taken by Nasheed’s government when the latter was president from 2008 to 2012. However, he said as president, both of them have taken difficult decisions after careful consideration into several factors and issues.
Furthermore, President Solih said he understands the importance of parliament majority for the government to run efficiently and smoothly, based on the experience of all governments that have come since 2008. Therefore, the president said he wishes to defend the parliament majority of MDP, and work with the parliament to fulfill the pledges made by the party and the administration towards the public.
President Solih further noted the government came into power in 2018 through a multi-party coalition, which must be honoured. Therefore, he said he will continue conducting the necessary discussions with the coalition partners on major issues.
