Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has stated fixing the issues in Thilafushi Phase 1 is a priority as part of the development of Phase 2.
Speaking to PSM News, the Managing Director of HDC Suhail Ahmed said some buildings in Thilafushi are damaged due to the formation of sinkholes caused by decomposing of waste that was used to reclaim the land. Suhail said the permanent solution would be to lease land in Thilafushi Phase 2 and prioritising those who want to transfer their industrial work from Phase 1. The land in Thilafushi Phase 1 could be levelled if enough industrial work is transferred to Phase 2, said Suhail adding HDC is working on making an assessment and gaining opinions from workers at Thilafushi Phase 1 in order to accommodate their needs during the development of Phase 2.
Furthermore, HDC has stated it is working to establish water, sewerage, electricity, and internet services in Thilafushi. In addition, a project has also begun to establish a 1.2-kilometre road for heavy vehicles, which will connect to the bridge planned for development as part of the Greater Male' Connectivity Project (GMCP).
The government has also stated it will work to empty a large part of the waste collected over the years in Thilafushi, highlighting that burning waste is a detriment to public health in the region. HDC also stated the development of Thilafushi will result in the island becoming a popular vacation spot for locals.
