Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced the temporary results of the by-elections held for the Women's Development Committees (WDCs) of five constituencies.
The WDC by-elections were held for constituencies in which the required number of candidates were not elected during the election held on April 10. As such, by-elections were held in Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll, Nolhivaram in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Dhiffushi in Kaafu Atoll, Feridhoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll, and Magoodhoo in Noonu Atoll.
Magoodhoo held its second by-election after the two candidates in the first by-election received the same number of votes. The temporary results show independent candidates won 4 seats while the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) won 3 seats and the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won two seats.
Notably, all the seats at the WDC by-election in Feridhoo were won by independent candidates, meaning that all the seats at the Feridhoo WDC are now filled by independent members.
ECM said the permanent results of the WDC by-elections will be announced on August 10.
