Utility Regulatory Authority probes electricity bill hike

Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has investigated complaints following a hike in the electricity bills for July.

URA stated over the electricity bills issued by State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) have come to its attention. URA stated it will investigate the issue despite there being no official complaint filed at the authority.

URA was established on December 13, 2020, and is tasked with establishing policies for providing utility services as well as regulating and providing licenses to utility service provides.

STELCO stated the reason for the electricity bill hike for its customers is due to the government cutting off subsidies. Other reasons for the hike in bills were due to some customers previously agreeing to split unpaid bills and adding the amount to the bills for the upcoming months, added STELCO.
