Maldives Police Service (MPS) has forwarded charges against Ali Haisham, one of the main perpetrators of the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).
Haisham was one of the 6 new suspects arrested earlier this month in relation the attack against the speaker. MPS has stated Haisham had played an active role in fixing the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that was triggered near Speaker Nasheed’s residence on May 6.
In a tweet, Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem revealed MPS has forwarded charges against Haisham to the PGO, adding a decision will be made early next week on pressing the charges in court. He said the decision will be made once the PGO receives the final forensic reports.
MPS had earlier forwarded charges against the first four suspects arrested in relation to the attack. They include Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, who is believed to have triggered the IED, and Thahumeen Ahmed, who was the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached. Meanwhile, Ahmed Fathih was charged for helping Adhuham flee the scene of the attack, and Mujaaz Ahmed was charged for helping Adhuham hide in Male’ City.
MPS had earlier revealed it had collected and analysed 5,600 hours of CCTV footage as part of the investigation into the May 6 attack. MPS had also collected information from 640 people, taking official statements from 228 people. Furthermore, MPS has collected over 830 items of physical evidence as part of the May 6 investigation.
