Government will not allow independence to be undermined: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will not allow Maldives’ independence to be undermined. He made the statement in his speech at the ceremony to mark the 56th anniversary of Maldives independence.

In his speech, Minister Imran said the basis of Maldives independence is Islamic faith as well as Maldivian language and culture, and therefore the current administration will continue to protect and preserve the country's heritage. The minister said maintaining the Maldives’ independence depends on the continuation of the current administration, which continues to provide peace and security to citizens and remains vigilant of those who would undermine the country's stability from the outside and from within. He said the current generation should pave the way for future generations, who have the responsibility to maintain the independence gained by their descendants.

Furthermore, Minister Imran added that the government and Television Maldives (TVM) are working together to hold a special TV programme to celebrate Maldives’ independence since citizens are unable to celebrate in public due to COVID-19 restrictions. The 18-hour long programme, which is hosted jointly by collaboration from Public Service Media (PSM) and the Ministry of Home Affairs and will feature celebratory activities being held across the Maldives.
