Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has revealed some suspects in the May 6 terrorist attack have expressed their wish to sign a written confession.
At a joint press conference with the Maldives Police Service (MPS), Shameem said two of the suspects have expressed their wish to sign a written confession, adding no action has been taken yet. He said the two suspects will receive a lighter sentence if the state allows them to sign a confession, and the relevant authorities are currently discussing the information and assistance they would receive from the suspects.
Furthermore, Shameem said the cases of four of the suspects involved in the attack will be filed at the court for prosecution early next month and that the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has 15 days to review the information on the suspects. Shameem said the PGO is required to file all necessary documents to the court before August 4, and that the PGO expects their trial to conclude within three months. He added that MPS is continuing to investigate all the suspects involved in the attack and that their cases will be filed at the court as soon as possible.
MPS has arrested a total of 10 suspects following the May 6 terrorist attack, which had severely injured Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
