Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated the loud explosion heard in Hulhumale’ during the early hours of July 23 was caused by a welding accident.
Special teams from MPS and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) were mobilised in the area surrounding Boaganvilla Magu in Hulhumale’ following a loud explosion heard in the area at around 12:35 a.m. on July 23. MPS said following an investigation into the incident, a welding accident from the terrace of Hulhumale’ Lot No. 1138 was identified as the cause of the explosion. MPS revealed no one was injured in the accident.
Security forces are currently on high alert, following the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attached to a motorcycle was used to attack the speaker during the May 6 attack.
