City council extends deadline for applying for parking in Male'

Male' City Council has extended the deadline to August 14 for individuals to apply for parking spots.

The council stated it made the decision due to complaints of difficulties faced by applicants in obtaining the necessary documents. The council is set to lease 211 parking spots from 10 areas, which includes 123 parking spots at intersections connected to Ameenee Magu, 24 parking spots at Artificial Beach, six spots at Alimas Carnival, and 58 spots around the Salman Mosque.

Male' City Council has also reduced the lease of the parking spots from USD 195 to USD 49. The city council has been working to establish parking zones for four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles to solve the shortage of parking in the capital city, and some areas have been opened for free parking while other areas are available for leasing.

Furthermore, Maldives Transport Authority (MTA) has stated it transferred the authority to approve garages for vehicle registration to the Male' City Council after discussions. MTA released the statement following a claim from the Mayor of Male' City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu that the authority to approve garages was transferred without notifying the city council.

In the statement, MTA stated it began discussions with the Male' City Council to transfer some of the responsibility regarding vehicle regulations in November last year. In this regard, MTA stated that it sent a letter on June 29 informing the Male' City Council that it was tasked with approving and checking garages for vehicle registration as of July 4.

MTA added that it later changed the implementation of the new regulation to August 1 after discussions with the Male' City Council, to allow the council more time to prepare for the change.
