MPS signs USD 48 million infrastructure development agreement

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has signed a USD 48 million infrastructure development agreement with India's ABL Indira Projects JV Private Limited. The agreement was signed at a special ceremony by Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed and Chairman of AB Indira Projects Bhupesh Nagarajan.

The two-year agreement is set to build police infrastructure in various parts of the Maldives to strengthen the decentralised and democratic framework for policing. The company will be constructing 61 police facilities, which includes 23 police stations, 21 police posts, and eight atoll police stations, as well as a custodial facility in Dhoonidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, as part of the agreement.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Hameed said this is the largest infrastructure development project undertaken by MPS and will allow police officers more resources for community policing in accordance with democratic principles. The project shows the government's commitment to developing and improving MPS, said the Commissioner thanking the government institutions involved in the project as well as the High Commission of India.

Also at the ceremony, Chairman Bhupesh Nagarajan said he is pleased to assist the Government of the Maldives and MPS in making the country more peaceful and safe.

India's EXIM Bank has agreed to provide a loan to finance 85% of the project, while the Maldivian government is set to finance the remaining 15%. The cost of the MPS infrastructure project is lower than infrastructure development projects conducted under the Public Service Investment Programme (PSIP).
