Charges to be pressed against perpetrators of May 6 attack next week

The May 6 Committee formed by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed efforts are ongoing to press charges against the individuals involved in the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

During the 179th meeting of MDP’s national assembly, Chairperson of the May 6 Committee, Parliamentarian Hassan Afeef shared details of the information gathered by the committee in relation to the investigation of the attack. Afeef said the committee had met with Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla who informed that efforts are ongoing to press charges against the perpetrators of the attack by July 20. He added the home minister had also told the committee that two experts from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) were active in the investigation of the attack.

Speaking further, Afeef stated the home minister had informed the committee that Maldives Police Service (MPS) had not received any intelligence information on the attack in advance. Afeef said the home minister had also stated religious extremism was the primary factor behind the attack on Speaker Nasheed, as all individuals involved in the attack share the same extremist ideologies.

During the meeting of MDP’s national assembly, the May 6 committee expressed concern that the police have not been able to identify those who funded the attack. The committee also expressed concern that security forces were not able to gather any intelligence information when such an attack was being planned.

The May 6 committee further stated it will closely monitor the implementation of the recommendations and proposals listed in the May 6 inquiry report, prepared by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services.
